Every surgery, every body, and every home is different.
Your plan is built around you. Your procedure, your comfort, your safety, and your peace of mind.
What we do before your surgery
1. Preop consultation & planning
- Review your procedure: Go over surgeon’s instructions, restrictions, and timelines in plain language.
- Clarify questions: Help you write down questions for your surgeon and understand what to expect.
- Medication & prep review: Talk through bowel preps, fasting, skin prep, and special instructions so that nothing is missed.
- Space planning: Arrange furniture for clear pathways, reduce trip hazards, and set up a safe and comfortable recovery area.
- Bed & seating setup: Position bed/chair for easier transfers, add pillows/supports for comfort and breathing.
- Bathroom safety: Suggest/position grab bars, nonslip mats, raised seats, shower chairs (if available).
- Lighting & access: Ensure night lights, easy access to phone, call bell, or alert system.
- Supply checklist: Help you identify and gather wound care items, ice/heat packs, hygiene items, and comfort tools.
- Medication station: Organize meds, pill boxes, and reminders in one easy to reach place.
- Paperwork hub: Keep discharge instructions, follow-up appointments, and emergency contacts together and visible.
- Teach safe assist techniques: How to help with transfers, walking, and toileting without hurting you or themselves.
- Set realistic expectations: What the first 24–72 hours may look like, and when to call the doctor.
2. Home safety & comfort setup
3. Supplies & organization
4. Caregiver coaching (if family is involved)
What we do after your surgery
1. Day of / first days of home support
- Settling in at home: Help you out of the car, into the house, and safely into bed or your recovery chair.
- Comfort positioning: Adjust pillows, supports, and body position to reduce pain and protect the surgical site.
- Initial safety check: Make sure pathways are clear, essentials are within reach, and you’re not at risk of falling.
- Mobility: Assist with short walks, repositioning, and exercises as allowed to reduce stiffness and clot risk.
- Medication reminders: Help you stay on schedule with pain meds and other prescriptions.
- Basic hygiene support: Assist with safe toileting, sponge baths, grooming, and dignity preserving care.
- Meals & hydration: Light meal prep, snacks, and fluids within your restrictions so you stay nourished and hydrated.
- Watch for red flags: Notice changes in pain, swelling, drainage, fever, confusion, or breathing that may need medical attention.
- Reinforce instructions: Help you follow weightbearing limits, movement restrictions, and wound care directions.
- Document concerns: Keep notes you can share with your surgeon or primary provider.
- Normalize the process: Remind you what’s typical vs. concerning so you don’t spiral into fear.
- Companionship: Sit with you, talk, listen, and help you feel less alone in the vulnerable moments.
- Encourage rest without guilt: Help you honor your body’s need to heal instead of pushing too hard, too fast.
- Check ins with loved ones: Update them (with your permission) so they feel informed and less anxious.
- Teach as we go: Show them safe ways to help with positioning, mobility, and daily tasks.
- Boundary & burnout awareness: Gently encourage realistic expectations and rest for caregivers, too.
