What Can Family Caregivers Actually Do VS What Requires a Licensed Professional

Caring for someone at home is one of the most meaningful things you can do. It’s also important to know where the line is between helping safely and needing skilled medical care. Understanding these boundaries keeps your loved one safe and protects caregivers from doing tasks outside their scope.

What Caregivers CAN Do: (Within a Non-Medical Scope)

Caregivers are the heart of daily care. They provide comfort, dignity, and stability through nonmedical support.

Here’s what’s safely within a caregiver’s role:

  • Assist with daily living tasks: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, meals, and light housekeeping
  • Offer companionship and emotional support
  • Observe and report changes in condition or behavior to a nurse or supervisor
  • Help with medication reminders or organization (not administration)
  • Perform nonsterile dressing changes under direction
  • Support range of motion exercises as taught by a therapist
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment
  • Document care and communicate concerns promptly
These tasks don’t require medical training; they rely on compassion, consistency, and good communication.

Tasks That Require a Licensed Professional

These tasks involve clinical judgment, sterile technique, or invasive procedures and must be performed by a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or another licensed clinician:

  • IV therapy and intravenous access
  • Sterile wound care and wound packing
  • Catheter insertion, irrigation, and removal
  • Tracheostomy care and suctioning
  • Injections (subcutaneous, intramuscular, or IV)
  • Ventilator management
  • Medication administration via feeding tube
  • Clinical assessment and diagnosis

These procedures require specialized training to prevent infection, injury, or complications.

These boundaries are important because of:

  • Safety: Skilled tasks need sterile technique and medical judgment.
  • Legal protection: Staying within scope protects caregivers and clients.
  • Teamwork: When caregivers and nurses work together, care is smoother and safer.
  • Trust: Families can feel confident knowing everyone is doing what they’re trained to do.

Caregivers are essential and they make daily life possible. Licensed professionals handle the medical side. Together, they form a complete care team that keeps your loved one safe, comfortable, and supported.
